The Alps

The Alps

3/18/2022: This is a wonderful loop hike. Beautiful wildflowers, birds, bighorn sheep and other plants and animals. Long views from the ridge. The beginning of the hike in the little valley is very pleasant and very well-marked. Hiking counterclockwise, you will eventually reach the top of the ridge and see views that might remind you of what it might look like in the Swiss Alps (but not as high).

Marg’s Notes: 86o/58o Whitewater Preserve. Only about ½ hour from resort. Arrived just after 8:00 am…when it opened. Very nice area! Started hiking at 8:15 am. Beautiful! lots of wildflowers! This was our favorite hike. Quite a bit of it was on the PCT. Quite a bit of uphill, but not too hard. Rod took LOTS! of pics. Saw a tree poppy (?) and wild clematis! Also, LOTS OF BEES! There were quite a few people at the beginning, but I think people peeled off to different trails. At the top we had nice views of both mountains & valley. On the back loop, we went thru a wash. Lots of cottonwoods & willows. We had trail mix & pop at the very nice picnic area when we were done. Ended up pretty warm! Rod may have been stung by a bee…Very nice area. There is a little nature trail too. We would go back.

Back to Shadow Ridge…Rest, Swim, Happy Hour! Start to pack.

Lasagna, bread, salad

Rod’s Ramblings from the Trail: We started about 8:20 in the morning temperatures 61° and it's a beautiful cloudless day. There appear to be several wildflowers. There are several hikes to choose from. We are doing the canyon loop view trail. There are quite a few people on the trail. But the good thing is they're all older folks like us. The trail is well groomed. When you reach the top of the ridge, the trail is just gorgeous, and it runs along the top of two or three hills. You can see a mountain to the right that's snow covered and this time of year there are several flowers and a lot of bees as well. Some real good picture opportunities. And don't judge that by the pictures I take 😊. As we walked along the ridge, Marg said she felt like we were in the Alps because of the snow covered mountain, rolling hills, flowers, and little valleys and gullies. It certainly looks like what I would think the alps might be like. I would think elves must live here somewhere. We wound up doing 4 mi loop. This has been the best hike of our trip so far.
